“WE ARE NOT HIRING UNTIL OBAMA IS GONE”

Waco, Georgia businessman Bill Looman boldly displays signs on all his trucks reading “New Company Policy. We are not hiring until Obama is gone”.  That is a very gutsy move but Looman did it.  How many others must there be out there there who feel the same way but don’t publish it publicly

If Obama loses the election and the Democratic Party loses the Senate you will see a mood change in this country that will knock your socks off overnight.  When the mood changes so will the economy.  It is sovereign nations that are in trouble, not the business community.  Capitalism has not failed us, democracy has.  And the same democracy can turn us about and set us in a proper direction again.

America is a well founded country and we may get another 50 years or more out of the old gal before the world succumbs to the predictions of Plato, the concern expressed by Benjamin Franklin and the warning of Alexis de Tocqueville.

SUPER COMMITTEE – FAILURE or SUCCESS?

Thomas Sowell asks the question, was the Super Committee’s report of  no agreement a failure or a success?

Many people are lamenting the failure of the Congressional “Super Committee” to come up with an agreement on ways to reduce the runaway federal deficits. But you cannot judge success or failure without knowing what the goal was.

If you think the goal was to solve the country’s fiscal crisis, then obviously the Super Committee was a complete failure. But, if you think the goal was to improve the chances of the Obama administration being re-elected in 2012, it was a complete success.

Responsibility for the spending that created our enormous and unprecedented deficit would fall squarely on Obama and the Democrats had there been no Super Committee.  But with it, and with the impasse, the Democrats get to pass off half of the blame to Republicans for not coming up with a workable deficit reduction plan.

Sen Jeff Sessions of Alabama had this and more to say,

The budget process began with the submission of the president’s budget plan. Analysis of that plan quickly revealed that the president’s $1.6 trillion tax increase proved totally inadequate to offset the enormous levels of new spending that would occur. Under this plan, over ten years, we would accumulate another $13 trillion in debt, never produce a single deficit less than $748 billion, produce a deficit in the tenth year of $1.2 trillion, and leave entitlement programs like Medicare in grave financial peril.

and

The Senate Democrat majority then made a decision: Rather than introduce a plan of their own, they chose to ignore the law and craft no budget at all.

Had the president made clear he wanted an agreement, a deal would have been achieved. It seems clear he wanted a campaign issue instead. Rather than confronting the great threat of our time—our $15 trillion debt—the commander-in-chief fled the battlefield. That’s not clever; it’s irresponsible. (Courtesy of Power Line blog)

Politics is like an iceberg. What you see is only what’s on the surface. Below the surface is where you find the real mess mass. Scratch that, leave it mess. .

CAPITALISM HAS DESTROYED EUROPE – GERMANY IS RESPOSNSIBLE FOR THE CRISIS IN GREECE

The magazines and newspapers in Europe are filled with stories pronouncing the end of capitalism.  They hold globalization and the free market system responsible for the financial crisis that has beset them.  It is greed in the private sector that threatens the continuation of the welfare state, they say.  There is no thought that it may be greed that drives the protesters who want to be carried by someone else’s life savings rather than work a little bit longer and create a little bit of wealth of their own.

To those who say capitalism is the cause, I have a few questions to ask.  When you retired from your government job at age 55 with a pension large enough to live on, where did the money to pay you come from?  With the free medical care you have enjoyed for most of your life, where did that money come from?  With free public education for your children and heavily subsidized university tuitions, where did that money come from?  Do you know?  Do you care?

Your government didn’t create it.  It was generated by the capitalist system you seek to end.  If you are successful what is your plan for a better system that will generate greater wealth, enough to continue and sustain and the benefits you have been enjoying and refuse to sacrifice?

The most absurd claims are the claims you read in the Greek papers, claims that Germany is to blame for the bankruptcy of Greece.  By that reasoning, I could buy a yacht for myself and blame you, dear reader, if the yacht is taken away from me because you wouldn’t pay for it.  Now that’s greed.

USELESS IDIOTS

Saul Alinsky is dead.  So is Occupy Wall Street.  Or if it’s not dead it is in the throes of dying.  Alinsky taught revolution as a three act play.  Act I is to gain respect.  That does not happen by defecating on police cars and shutting down subway stations at rush hour.

In the first couple of weeks of OWS, the movement was seen as counterpoint to the Tea Party.  It may have even been intended as such by its founders, whomever they may be.  There were people with honest gripes about the lack of jobs, crony capitalism, ill conceived bailouts, and stimulus that didn’t stimulate.  However, given the obsession of the OWS leadership with democracy and endless “General Assemblies” the movement never found a unified direction.  You can’t steer a ship with a hundred rudders in the hands of a hundred helmsmen each with a different idea of which direction forward is.

Gradually the cross section of ordinary Americans who really did want jobs and better government withdrew.  They left the tent cities to the shower-less and the anarchists whose idea of social justice is – why make it if you can just take it?  This is exactly the type of behavior Saul Alinsky sought to correct.  Without effective leadership they are proving to be no more than a band of useless idiots.

ADD CAIN TO THE LIST

The Democratic Party’s character assassins can cut another notch in their gun.  It looks like they have done it again, judges Pickering and Bork, candidates Palin and Cain all maliciously, viciously, personally and successfully attacked.  That’s not the full list, to be sure.

This time the Democrats may have shot themselves in the foot.  Cain would have vulnerabilities in the general election.  He is weak on foreign policy and has no experience in government.  Killing Cain cleared the way for Newt Gingrich to represent the conservative faction within the Republican Party.  It would do my heart good to see Cain win the nomination but Gingrich is the stronger candidate.

A note to Michelle:  I was always proud of my country until your husband became President. And I will be proud again when he’s not.

FASCISM IN AMERICA

Jesse Ventura, former governor of Minnesota, says he is leaving the United States, labeling it a fascist nation.  Anger over dismissal of his lawsuit against Homeland Security’s TSA for unnecessary groping that led Ventura to make the outlandish accusation about the USA.  But let’s take a look.  It may not be as outlandish as it seems.

Few words are as carelessly and callously thrown about as is the word fascist.  The term “fascist pig” is commonly enough applied to conservatives to be included in the online Urban Dictionary as an identifier for right wing thinkers.  In this use, fascist is purely an epithet, an insult.  The word has been detached from its meaning, just as calling someone a bastard is no longer a reference to the circumstances of his birth.  The distortion of bastard is complete but the meaning of the term fascist is still in transition.

Merriam Webster defines fascism as:

a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition.  (emphasis is ours)

Benito Mussolini bragged that he had made Italy a Fascist nation before WW II.  The left enthusiastically embraced the idea at the time.  Mussolini’s version brought the means of production under government control whereby assets owned by the private sector could be converted to the public good without the need to nationalize and pay for them.  Mussolini’s fascism was a central planning concept.

Ventura’s assertion doesn’t look so quite so outlandish in this light.  Remember Hugo Chavez’s expression of admiration and envy when Barack Obama gained control of General Motors without violence or force, without even paying for it through nationalization.  That’s the appeal of fascism.  If you can have the milk without buying the cow, why buy the cow?

Does any objective and knowledgeable person doubt that the Solyndra Corporation was a tool of the Obama administration?  It was the poster boy for the president’s green energy program.  He chose a Solyndra facility as the location for a speech touting government commitment to financing green corporations like Solyndra at a company facility.  The company owed its very existence to the government, short lived though it was.  Some of that money was expected to find its way back in campaign contributions.  We only know about the Solyndra affair because it blew up.  How many others are there that we don’t know about?

If fascism is government control of privately held assets, then wouldn’t preventing Boeing from building airplanes in the state of their choice be a fascist act.

Jesse Ventura, you misused the term but thank you for bringing up the point.  However, I would have more respect for you if stayed to fight and not just whine and leave.

THE GREAT AMERICAN TRAGEDY

President Obama spoke recently at the Black Caucus Annual Awards Dinner.  After reminding his audience of the civil rights struggle he went on to say “Take off your bedroom slippers. Put on your marching shoes” his voice rose in response to applause as he continued. “Shake it off. Stop complainin’. Stop grumblin’. Stop cryin’. We are going to press on. We have work to do.”

The same words can convey very different messages to different audiences.  When a controversial black president tells a black activist audience to put on their marching shoes and press on, that the struggle has never been easy, it is an emotion filled charge equating opposition to his jobs bill to injustices against blacks in the Jim Crow days.  Obama is fanning a breeze over the smolders of rage and playing the race card to the hilt.  When Obama says to a black audience “We have shaped our own destiny before and we can shape our own destiny again” he is not making a patriotic appeal to the nation.  He is pitting blacks against whites over the issue of unemployment.

There have been many great African-Americans down through the years.  The first person to die for the American Revolutionary cause was a black man named Crispus Attucks.  We can name Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas, Colin Powell, and Condoleezza Rice and of course, Martin Luther King.  The list of great black American men and women goes on and on.  It is a tragedy of tragedies that our first black president should turn out to be a professional agitator who opens old wounds to satisfy his personal rage.

OCCUPY OAKLAND ACTS UP

“U.S. VET INJURED IN OAKLAND POLICE ACTION” is a headline that gets your attention.

Scott Olsen at Occupy Oakland

Scott Olsen is a 24 year old Iraq war veteran.  He suffered a fractured skull while participating in the Occupy Oakland protest and was listed in critical condition at the Highland Hospital in Oakland, California.

“It’s unconscionable that you go overseas to protect our country, but you get injured by police officers who are supposed to be protecting us,”

I guess it all depends on what the meaning of “us” is.  The police were not there to protect the protestors from the citizens of Oakland; they were there to protect law abiding citizens from the law breaking protesters.  Olsen’s injuries are regrettable; so is the implication of police brutality in the headline.  But it was Olsen’s own choice to put himself in harms way.

It could be argued whether or not the use of tear gas was necessary to stop a crowd that was getting out of control.  Perhaps it was.  A video you can see here shows the ensuing mayhem in which Olsen sustained his injury.  It appears, as NBC reports, that Olsen was hit by something thrown or propelled in the air.  There were no policemen anywhere within striking distance of the incident when it happened.

A primary purpose on the part of the organizers of protest demonstrations is to shape public opinion.  Unfortunately, many voters don’t read much past the headlines. For them the incident will go down as police brutality which it clearly was not.

INVESTING IN BONDS IS SAFE

Investing in stocks is risky.  Investing in bonds is safe.  Sovereign bonds are the safest because they are backed by the full taxing power of the nation.  Investors in Greek sovereign bonds just lost half of their money.  The U.S. stock market will soar when it opens.  So much for safe.

When a nation has depleted the wealth of its citizens, who can they tax?  When a country’s full taxing power becomes near worthless who will lend them money they cannot pay back?  When a corporation goes bankrupt it sells some assets, perhaps all.  When the Soviet Union went bankrupt they could no longer keep their satellites under control.  When members of the European Union go bankrupt the functional nations pay the bills of the squandering nations.  How long and how often will they be willing to do that?

The shelf life of the Euro is shorter than that of the dollar, but that’s not saying much unless we stop following Europe into the dustbin of insolvency.

THE GADDAFI THING. DID OBAMA DO IT? OF COURSE HE DIDN’T

It was a street vendor in Tunisia and the facilitation of the Internet that led to the dictator’s death.  I am surprised Al Gore isn’t taking credit for it.  After all, he invented the internet.

Mohamed Bouazizi set his body on fire in a public act of suicide on January 4th when a Tunisian official confiscated the goods he was selling from his cart.  Public outrage went viral over the internet and the Arab Spring was sprung.  It was local rioting that started the action in Libya.  It was Libyan guerillas that carried out the fight.  It was a local guerilla that killed Gaddafi’s after he had been captured alive.  Obama has been busy assassinating other people.  But he never did get Gaddafi.

Of course, Obama is taking the credit for removing the brutal dictator from power.  Let’s remember that when the al qaeda-like Muslim Brotherhood takes control.  France and Europe beware; your invaders are gaining control of your oil supply.  Ladies, put your burkas on, stay in the house and prepare to share your husbands.  United Nations, congratulations!  You have a new candidate to chair the Human Rights Council.
