LAUGHNER, PALIN AND HATE

A demented young man, whose most prized books are the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Hitler’s Mein Kampf, becomes obsessed with rage when he gets no answer from a politician to an unintelligible question he has posed about the meaning of words. The man takes a gun, shoots the Democratic politician, and kills a Republican judge, a nine year old child and a few other people. And then, some people blame Sarah Palin. It makes no more sense than when President Bush was blamed for a tsunami that hit Hawaii and an earthquake in Haiti. But this time a significant number of people hold to the absurdity.

When Sarah Palin first burst onto the national scene less than three years ago, my instant impression was – what a breath of fresh air! She is cheerful and articulate, a sprightly woman of good spirits with commendable family values. How did she come to be the focus of so much hatred? It is not an easy question to answer.

Hatred, like love, is an emotion; it does not need a reason. It comes from the heart not from the mind. To search for a reason for hatred of Palin is to search in vain. We must search instead for a cause.

Sarah Palin holds no office, passed no laws, committed no frauds and speaks no evil of anyone. She has said nothing more outrageous than “You can see Russia from Alaska.” As a possible presidential candidate for office, Palin may be a political threat to the left, but no more than any other presidential contender. Some would say less, because they think she is un-electable.

Rush Limbaugh is irreverent, bombastic and arrogant. Palin is none of these, yet much greater and deeper hatred befalls her. The left understands Limbaugh; his style is not unlike many of their own. He is the enemy they know. But a person like Sarah Palin is alien to today’s progressives on the left. It is in the nature of man to harbor great fear of the unknown, a fear that at times extends beyond all rationality. Imaginations are left to run wild. Such seems to be the case with the Tea Party and Palin.

Hatred is an emotion that trickles from the right and flows like a great river from the left. Perhaps in that, there lies a clue. The right is more religious than the left. Their religion teaches tolerance and love. Not all believers follow the teachings of course, but there is no equivalent central force denouncing hate in the agnostic, atheist or existential world.

There is an old Cherokee fable known as the Parable of Two Wolves that sheds some light on the question. You can read it here.

JARED LAUGHNER EMAILS

THE CREEP

Lynda Sorenson, 52, went back to community college in Tucson in hopes of qualifying for a job. Jared Loughner happened to be one of her classmates. Here is a sample of emails Sorenson sent to her friends last summer, as provided to the Washington Post:

From June 1, the first day of class:
“One day down and nineteen to go. We do have one student in the class who was disruptive today, I’m not certain yet if he was on drugs (as one person surmised) or disturbed. He scares me a bit. The teacher tried to throw him out and he refused to go, so I talked to the teacher afterward. Hopefully he will be out of class very soon, and not come back with an automatic weapon.”

From June 10:
“As for me, Thursday means the end to week two of algebra class. It seems to be going by quickly, but then I do have three weeks to go so we’ll see how I feel by then. Class isn’t dull as we have a seriously disturbed student in the class, and they are trying to figure out how to get rid of him before he does something bad, but on the other hand, until he does something bad, you can’t do anything about him. Needless to say, I sit by the door.”

From June 14:
“We have a mentally unstable person in the class that scares the living crap out of me. He is one of those whose picture you see on the news, after he has come into class with an automatic weapon. Everyone interviewed would say, Yeah, he was in my math class and he was really weird. I sit by the door with my purse handy. If you see it on the news one night, know that I got out fast…”

Jared’s rampage had nothing to do with his political ideology. It had to do with his dislike of an answer the Congresswoman gave him to a general question he asked at one of her rallies. Mother Jones magazine reports:

[A friend of Jared’s named Tierney said] the question was, ‘What is government if words have no meaning?'””He said, ‘Can you believe it, they wouldn’t answer my question.’ Ever since that, he thought she was fake, he had something against her.”

Giffords’ answer, whatever it was, didn’t satisfy Loughner. “He said, ‘Can you believe it, they wouldn’t answer my question,’ and I told him, ‘Dude, no one’s going to answer that,'” Tierney recalls. “Ever since that, he thought she was fake, he had something against her.”

The tie-ins the left are trying to make to Sarah Palin and the Tea Party are beyond ignorance. They are downright dishonest. Of course you already knew that.

POLITICALLY CORRECT BOOK LIST

GLOBAL FREEZING

You have seen the headlines: Europe Closed Again Due to Winter Storms, Snow in Baghdad Second Time Ever, Record Cold Reported Here, Record Cold Reported There, Polar Bears Cuddle with Cubs to Keep Them From Freezing. Now fast forward a couple of years.

April 1, 2017.
Today the New York Times published an article entitled “Hudson Tunnels to Be Abandoned When River Dries Up.” UN scientists predict global cooling will cause water levels to drop 48 feet by 2040. As temperatures cool, much of the precipitation that normally falls will remain in a solid form called ice. The more water that remains in this solid form, the less there will be to feed future precipitation (rain and snow). As this vicious cycle proceeds, oceans will begin to recede and the world will begin to reveal itself. There is little hope for change in the outlook, scientists say.

A minister who recently moved to Florida blamed it on the government. “They lied! They lied!” he repeated. “The government had a program to stop the warming so certain people would die! Now the chickens have come home to roost.”

Economists worry that declines in the value of prime property could precipitate a financial crisis if rich people who own waterfront property default on their mortgage payments. Republicans are holding Obama responsible, while Democrats are blaming Bush. Truthers say Bush wanted to dry up the Gulf coast so Texas would be bigger and Obama wanted Kenya to be a little cooler so he could retire to his home in comfort. We say its because the sun has lost some of its spots. It’s not anthropogenic at all. The climate change issue is just like this post, a lot of nonsense.

FOUR OF A KIND? NO WAY, JOSE!

Sean Penn, Oliver Stone, Noam Chomsky and Bill Clinton

In case you have not heard, Hugo Chavez has rejected President Obama’s choice of Ambassador to Venezuela, entry VISA denied. The Venezuelan dictator has submitted a list of four names from which the President may choose a new Ambassador. They are Sean Penn, Oliver Stone, Noam Chomsky and Bill Clinton.

My first thought when I saw the list was, what about Cindy? But then, Cindy Sheehan is a woman of course. And then, how did Bill Clinton who believes in America and loves it to the core get on this moron’s motley list of wealthy American born, America bashing Marxists ? – two idiots from Hollywood, one brilliant misguided college professor and one ex US President. And why select Clinton and not Carter? Has Hugo no loyalty? After all, it was Jimmy Carter who personally and officially certified Chavez’s election as valid and free from fraud. Hugo owes him one for that.

I say, send Penn, Stone and Chomsky, all three. At least it will get them out of the country.

HOW MANY HOURS ARE THERE IN A DAY? THAT DEPENDS ON HARRY REID

Democrats are still manipulating Congressional rules. Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi developed the process to an art. She took popular bills a Democratic House could pass and set the rules so they would fail, all in order to publicly blame Republicans for “blocking” passage. The party, with the aid of the press, won some PR points, their constituents be damned. To Democrats like Pelosi, painting a bad face on Republicans trumps doing the will of your supporters.

Now, Republicans control the House so Nancy can’t play with the rules. But Harry Reid can; his party still controls the Senate. The filibuster is a tool intended to protect the political minority from excessive dominance by the majority. The majority never likes it. Reid wants to curtail its use in the Senate. There is a claim that the Constitution allows filibuster rules to be changed by simple majority vote provided it is done in the first day of a new Congress.

One day isn’t enough time for Harry Reid to get all his ducks in a row for the vote. So employing what the New York Times calls “a sleight-of-hand”, Harry has found a way to make a day beginning Wed Jan 5 last until Mon Jan 24. That is 456 hours, give or take an hour or two. Copernicus would be appalled.

The Times explains the trick. The Majority Leader plans to call a recess before the first day ends. That stops the legal clock. The clock starts again when the recess ends, to be scheduled for Jan 24th. We think little less manipulation and a little more negotiation would produce a little better legislation.

CENSUS, TAXES and CONSEQUENCES

Californians moved out. New Yorker’s left too. Texas, Idaho, Arizona and Utah grew. Population moved out from the high tax states into the low tax states. Yogi Berra would say “People don’t go there no more. Taxes are too high.” Economists have a term for it; it’s called ‘rational expectations’.

Michael Barone:

[G]rowth tends to be stronger where taxes are lower. Seven of the nine states that do not levy an income tax grew faster than the national average. The other two, South Dakota and New Hampshire, had the fastest growth in their regions, the Midwest and New England.

Altogether, 35 percent of the nation’s total population growth occurred in these nine non-taxing states, which accounted for just 19 percent of total population at the beginning of the decade.

Conservatives say “Of course.” Democrats are puzzled. Benefits are more liberal in California and New York than in Texas or Idaho. Texas is flat, Idaho is cold, why do they move to such places? (There is no need to answer, they aren’t listening).

HAS THE LEOPARD CHANGED HIS SPOTS?

The President’s New Year message to the people was eloquent, positive and replete with praise for the greatness of the nation we call home. There were no “buts” or “excepts” and no hint that it was not ever so. The flag pin on his lapel was as conspicuous in its presence as it has been in its absence at times in the past. The content of his message was worthy of Ronald Reagan. Has the leopard changed his spots?

In the opinion of our editorial staff, he has not. In our previous post  What Will Obama Do Now?, we wrote that after the mid-term election results Obama would revisit the teachings of his mentors for guidance on the best path to follow from here to his goal. The fast-track hit a roadblock, and a solid one at that. We said the Dude is done, Obama could see it too. Continuance of the transformation of America would first require transformation of the Dude himself. In a free Democracy like America, a radical cannot capture hearts and minds in sufficient numbers to survive elections and stay in power. A leader is needed, a leader who believes in the land. Someone once said “perception is reality”; and forming a winning perception will be the tack for the next two years.

The apparent transformation is stark. But few people change their beliefs on the proverbial dime. Are we to think an America seen as notable for its flaws is suddenly seen as noble from its inception? Or, an America that was not exceptional is now the greatest nation on earth?

“But Mr. President, didn’t you say America has not always lived up to its aspirations?”, asked John. “That was before the mid-term election results, John” answered Barack with a grin.

JUSTAPHOTO

GOProud

In a earlier post we suggested watching MSNBC to get to know your opponent.  Now we find it can be a place to get to know your allies as well. We had never heard of  Christopher Barron or GOProud until he appeared on the ED Show.  A lot more civil but just as arrogant Cenk Uygar, was sitting in for Ed Schultz.

Barron was unflappable and spot-on with his rejoinders.  You will enjoy the video.
