Monday
Croc found in the streets of New York
Funny, I thought all the crocks were in Washington.

Tuesday
The U.S. State Dept reported America’s shortcomings to the U.N.

Too many Blacks and Hispanics are unemployed, they said. We know why a lot of Hispanics are unemployed, they are unskilled and you can’t communicate with them because they don’t speak English. We’ll let you form your own opinion of why so many Blacks are unemployed.

Wednesday
Intel CEO says Washington policies give business no choice but to build plants overseas.
The Obama Administration has no clue as to how the economy works.

Thursday
Poll – Likely voters now trust Republicans more on all 10 major issues

Friday
Bernanke gives speech. Morgan Stanley says U.S. default on debt is inevitable. Obama plays golf.

NEW COMBAT TROOPS DEPLOYED TO IRAQ

Bangor, Maine is the last stop in the U.S. for many troops on the way East because it is the closest major airport to Europe and points east. The Bangor Daily News reported at 9:45 yesterday evening that approximately 150 new combat troops are leaving Bangor for Iraq. Read the article here.

They are not “new” troops because they are replacing soldiers who are returning. They are not “combat” troops because , although trained and classified and as combat troops, they are not expected to engage in combat. Their function will be to train others to engage in combat.

That sounds like a very fine line of distinction. The returning troops saw little actual combat recently. They were combat ready, of course, but the arriving soldiers will also be ready if needed.

In the fanfare surrounding “the withdrawal of the last combat soldier from Iraq” the fact that 50,000 troops remained was completely overlooked by the press. That is an awful lot of teachers.

BLOGGER’S TAX

It’s not a threat. It’s a reality. However, we only know of one city that is enforcing it at this time, Philadelphia, PA, the “City of Brotherly Love”. The fee is $300 for a “business license” to publish a blog. If the blog produces no income and has no apparent commercial intent the fee is still being applied on the assertion that it is a “potential business”.

No new law was passed. The city simply widened the net of an existing law by declaring blogging to be a business, the same as a shoe store or barber shop. This class of tax in some states is called an Entity Tax. An Entity Tax is an Orwellian tax because it taxes something simply because it exists. No justification required.

Here we have an example of what Mark Levin calls “soft tyranny”.

UNREASONABLE ARRESTS IN EUROPE

The European Arrest Warrant

Imagine for a moment, you are traveling in your car on vacation with a friend who happens to smoke a little pot. You are stopped for speeding and the police find some marijuana in your car. They make a note of it, but arrest neither you nor your friend. A couple of months later, back in your home state there comes an unexpected knock on the door. Handcuffs come out and off you go to spend up to 90 days in jail followed by extradition to the state where you incurred the ticket for speeding.

Preposterous? Of course, and it can’t happen here. But it is happening to travelers within the states of the European Union. Here is Wikipedia’s description of the law.

The European Arrest Warrant (EAW) is an arrest warrant valid throughout all member states of the European Union (EU). Once issued by a member state, it requires the receiving member state to arrest and transfer a criminal suspect or sentenced person to the issuing state that so that the person can be put on trial or complete a detention period. Extradition must take place within 90 days of arrest or within 10 days if the arrested person consents to surrender.

An EAW can only be issued for the purposes of conducting a criminal prosecution (not merely an investigation), or enforcing a custodial sentence. An EAW can only be issued for offences carrying a maximum penalty of 12 months or more. Where sentence has already been passed an EAW can  be issued if the prison term to be enforced is at least four months long.

[Edited] The law was intended to increase the speed and ease of extradition  by removing the political and administrative phases of decision-making and converting the process into a system run entirely by the judiciary.

The law is known in Europe as the “No evidence needed” rule. Let us be thankful or the freedoms we have on this side of the pond. Read more.

LAST WEEK

Week ending August 20, 2010
Monday

Harry Reid comes out against the Mosque’s being built at ground zero.
What’s next? Will he run as a Tea Party candidate?

Tuesday
French police fine male tourists for appearing shirtless in public.
In France?? How can this be? The report specifies “tourists”. Does that mean residents are exempt from the $48 “show-your-abs” fee? Or could it be that the fee simply doesn’t apply because French men are too discreet (or embarrassed) to show off their chests in the first place?

Wednesday
Dr Laura decides to call it quits.
After listening to the complete audio I must say she owes a big apology to the caller. You can find the complete audio at Media Matters on this page.

Thursday
Unemployment claims climbed to a nine-month high, 500,000 unemployed.
This time there were no anomalies such as was the case when the census workers were released. It is FDR all over again.

Friday
Here is a list of headlines all seen today.

“Allahu Akbar” Iran test fires new missile

INSIDE THE BLAGO JURY ROOM

One jury member speaks out. Eric Sarnello, a criminal justice student, shared his thoughts with CBS news. The 12 person jury came very close to a unanimous decision in the case…except for one woman holdout. “She just looked at things a different way,” said Sarnello. “We’d listen to a tape and people would be like, ‘wow, that just confirms that he’s guilty’ and she’d say, ‘that just confirms to me that he’s not guilty”. It’s a mistrial on 23 of 24 counts.

Ah, the frustrations of our legal system. Now we must double the expense, double the time, double the effort, and do it again. By the time he is convicted he may have been elected to the Senate seat himself. Why not? Boston Mayor Jim Curley once ran the city government exercising the privileges of office from his jail cell. He later ran for Governor of Massachusetts. Integrity is not a requirement for Democratic office seekers.

OBAMA’S ACORN LOSES ON APPEAL

On Friday the 13th the Federal Second Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a lower court’s decision that stood in the way of Congress’s move to end government funding for the Association of Community Organizers for Reform now, acronymed for the oak tree nut, ACORN. In their appeal, ACORN pleaded that such a decision would be “a corporate death sentence”. Let us hope they were right.

It is now 2 days after the decision. Googling “New York Times, ACORN loses appeal” brings up nothing from the Times, nor did other variations of search. Perhaps the editors are all tied up in a memorial service.

Democratic operatives found to be infiltrating the Tea Party
The goal is to discredit the Tea Party and split it into factions. That’s the Left, don’t debate, just destroy.

Stevens was one of the kings of pork in the Senate and an embarrassment to the Republican Party.

Thousands of dead menhadens wash ashore in southern New Jersey.
Don’t be embarrassed, the spellchecker had never heard of menhadens either. They are a fish about the size of a sardine. If you are planning a vacation it looks like New Orleans might be better idea than the Jersey shore.

ALVIN GREENE, DEMOCRATIC PARTY'S CHOICE FOR SENATOR FROM SOUTH CAROLINA

Friday
Democratic Senatorial candidate from S.C. is indicted
It’s that Black Green guy whom some Democrats thought must be a ringer because he had zero qualifications for the job. They got him on porno charges. Imagine that, unethical behavior before he was even elected!

BUSH GETS MAXINE WATERS IN TROUBLE

THE VICTIM

FOX News reports “Maxine Waters on Friday blamed the Bush administration for her ethics problems.”

It looks like the man did it again. The lady’s husband has a bank. The bank was not doing very well. Paulson was not giving any government money to the bank. Paulson was appointed by Bush. So as you can see, it was Bush who forced the lady to stoop below the normal ethical behavior befitting a Congress person.

It has to be true. Maxine said it herself.

VIRGINIA JOINS ARIZONA IN IMMIGRATION FIGHT

VIRGINIA GOVERNOR McDONNELL

Virginia Gov. McDonnell is paving the way for authorizing the VA State Police to check for immigration status when they stop individuals for other reasons. Virginia joins a growing list of States who see the need to step in and act where the Federal government has failed them.

Nine States have filed amicus briefs in Federal Court in support of Arizona in the pending case of the Obama government vs. the State of Arizona. Those States are AL, FL, MI, NE, PA, SC and TX. Five States have gone a step further and have introduced their own legislation in the same vein as Arizona’s. Those States are SC, PA, MI, MN and RI. Others expected to introduce similar legislation soon are FL, TX and UT.

If the first obligation of government is to keep its citizens safe, should not the second obligation be to keep the States United? It is the President’s responsibility to maintain such unity. Obama, however, has brought a bucket of gasoline to put out the fire.

In Rules for Radicals, Saul Alinsky taught that the first goal for a community organizer needs to be acceptance. The second is to agitate. Crisis and controversy are tools to be used to bring an increase of power. Obama is strengthening his position with his core following and shows no concern for the division he is feeding. This is wholly consistent with his Marxist leanings.
