OCCUPY WOMEN TAKE THEIR PROTEST TO MEN’S TOILETS

A new women’s movement has been launched by Ms. Li Tingting in Guangzhou, China.  Speaking as a man, I have no objection to women’s movements.  Most of them are rather pleasant in fact.  But this one takes on a new dimension.  A group of ladies in China are demanding toilet equality.

When I first saw the headline I thought the fuss was about the age old conflict of the seat.  The ladies know we need it up but they always, always leave it down.  That has long been a pet beef of mine.  But no, the women in China are griping about the long waiting lines to enter the Ladies Room when there are no lines at all for the men.  Is this a valid example of social injustice or just some new form of maleness envy?

Studies show that there are about the same number of men in the world as there are women.  Further analysis reveals the size of the restrooms generally to be equal.  So what can be the cause of the problem?  More important, what is the solution?  How about MORE STALLS FOR THE 50% !!

Read about it here.  It’s priceless.

BREAKING NEWS !!

The world blew up this morning at about 8 o’clock.  There is nothing left. According to the New York Times, women, children and minorities suffered the most.  Vladimir Putin vowed he would restore the Soviet Union, even though it is now scattered in fragments somewhere in space.  Chavez says America did it, of course.  Obama blamed it on Bush.

“The United States are gone, all 57 of them”, noted  President Obama, then added “Well, at least it’s a complete transformation.  My only wish is that Martha’s Vineyard could have been spared”.  The insurance industry is in a panic as you might expect; they had exclusion clauses for losses due to war but not for this.

Al Gore termed it an environmental disaster.  He said it never would have happened under his administration.  He held his home state of Tennessee responsible.  “My own friends, the people who knew me best let me down.  If I had carried Tennessee the Supreme Court would not have been able to revoke my election.”  The Sierra Club expressed concern that the fracturing of earth into a collection of asteroids presents a threat to already endangered species on the other planets.  “If one of the big chunks, like Africa for instance, hits one of the smaller planets the impact will be devastating”, a representative explained.

Harold Camping called in long distance and said excitedly, “I called it!  I was just a little bit off on the date”.  Paul Krugman insists it could have been prevented if the government had only raised taxes and spent more money.  But when asked how in the world (excuse the passé expression) that would help, all he returned was a silent grin.  On the political front, the 99% are enraged.  The group is protesting that their rights have been denied because they no longer have any place to demonstrate.

The good news is Palin channeled Ronald Reagan and reports that he smiled and said “Take heart.  I have unshakeable faith in the resourcefulness of the American people.  A great hill will be rebuilt and the United States will shine brightly from the top of it once again”.

LINCOLN at COOPER UNION

President Abraham Lincoln made his public address at Cooper Union in New York City on April 27, 1860.  Six weeks later the Confederates fired on Fort Sumter starting the American Civil War.  It was Lincoln’s final speech prior to the war.

An eyewitness that evening said, “When Lincoln rose to speak, I was greatly disappointed. He was tall, tall, – oh, how tall! and so angular and awkward that I had, for an instant, a feeling of pity for so ungainly a man.” However, once Lincoln warmed up, “his face lighted up as with an inward fire; the whole man was transfigured. I forgot his clothes, his personal appearance, and his individual peculiarities. Presently, forgetting myself, I was on my feet like the rest, yelling like a wild Indian, cheering this wonderful man.”

Lincoln’s law partner. William Herndon, who was not present but knew the speech, said it was “devoid of all rhetorical imagery.  It was constructed with a view to accuracy of statement, simplicity of language, and unity of thought. In some respects like a lawyer’s brief, it was logical, temperate in tone, powerful – irresistibly driving conviction home to men’s reasons and their souls.”

Lincoln began:

The facts with which I shall deal this evening are mainly old and familiar; nor is there anything new in the general use I shall make of them.  If there shall be any novelty, it will be in the mode of presenting the facts, and the inferences and observations following that presentation.

In his speech last autumn, at Columbus, Ohio, as reported in “The New-York Times,” Senator Douglas said: “Our fathers, when they framed the Government under which we live, understood this question just as well, and even better, than we do now.”

I fully indorse this, and I adopt it as a text for this discourse. I so adopt it because it furnishes a precise and an agreed starting point for a discussion between Republicans and that wing of the Democracy headed by Senator Douglas. It simply leaves the inquiry: “What was the understanding those fathers had of the question mentioned?”

What is the frame of government under which we live?  The answer must be: “The Constitution of the United States…”

About midway in the speech:

I would say to them [Democrats in opposition to ending slavery]: – You consider yourselves a reasonable and a just people; and I consider that in the general qualities of reason and justice you are not inferior to any other people. Still, when you speak of us Republicans, you do so only to denounce us a reptiles, or, at the best, as no better than outlaws. You will grant a hearing to pirates or murderers, but nothing like it to “Black Republicans.” In all your contentions with one another, each of you deems an unconditional condemnation of “Black Republicanism” as the first thing to be attended to. Indeed, such condemnation of us seems to be an indispensable prerequisite – license, so to speak – among you to be admitted or permitted to speak at all. Now, can you, or not, be prevailed upon to pause and to consider whether this is quite just to us, or even to yourselves? Bring forward your charges and specifications, and then be patient long enough to hear us deny or justify.

Lincoln ends with this pledge:

Neither let us be slandered from our duty by false accusations against us, nor frightened from it by menaces of destruction to the Government nor of dungeons to ourselves. LET US HAVE FAITH THAT RIGHT MAKES MIGHT, AND IN THAT FAITH, LET US, TO THE END, DARE TO DO OUR DUTY AS WE UNDERSTAND IT.

GEORGE BEVERLY SHEA

His frends call him Bev.  George Beverly Shea is Grammy Award-winning Canadian-born gospel singer and hymn composer. Bev celebrated his 103rd birthday less than three weeks ago.  He was born on the first of February in the year 1909.

If it is appointed unto man to live three score years and ten, Bev has indeed been blessed.

PUTIN ON THE PROWL

Barack Obama & Vladimir Putin at Putin's dacha...

From the Washington Post

MOSCOW — A nasty spate of anti-Americanism set off by Vladimir V. Putin has grown into waves of attacks aimed at the new American ambassador and Russian opposition leaders, raising questions about the future of U.S.-Russian relations.

The attacks started just before the December parliamentary elections and have intensified as the March 4 presidential vote approaches. Although widely viewed as aimed primarily at a domestic audience, they have grown shriller and more aggressive, provoking debate about whether Russia is deliberately giving a cold shoulder to President Obama’s effort to promote more productive relations.

A main target of the attacks is Michael McFaul, the new ambassador, a longtime democracy advocate and Russia expert who as a top aide to Obama has been an architect of what the White House calls a “reset’’ with Moscow.

Barack Obama cozied up to to the Russians and and tried to convince them we should be friends now that we share the same ideology.  Putin didn’t buy it, of course.

MORE ON THE CATHOLIC FLAP

Professor Paul Rahe minces no words in writing More Than a Touch of Malice, an article you can read at Ricochet.  He adds his wisdom to the argument that, far from committing a gaffe, Obama’s riling of the Catholic Church was a deliberate and well thought out step taken to define and solidify his base.

In 2008, when he first ran for the Presidency, Barack Obama posed as a moderate most of the time.  This time, he is openly running as a radical. His aim is to win a mandate for the fundamental transformation of the United States that he promised in passing on the eve of his election four years ago and that he promised again when he called his administration The New Foundation.

In the process, he intends to reshape the Democratic coalition – to bring the old hypocrisy to an end, to eliminate those who stand in the way of the final consolidation of the administrative entitlements state, to drive out the faithful Catholics once and for all, to jettison the white working class, and to build a new American regime on a coalition of  highly educated upper-middle class whites, feminists, African-Americans, Hispanics, illegal immigrants, and those belonging to the public-sector unions. To Americans outside this coalition, he intends to show no mercy.

Saul Alinsky, author of Rules for Radicals, taught that transforming a nation with a prosperous middle class like the United States into a Marxist socialist society could only be accomplished if approached as a three act play:

Act I – join the crowd, gain respect, acceptance and legitimacy.

Act II – develop the theme, spread discontent, and build a following for Act III

Act III – the act of final transformation which Alinsky says will of necessity, be violent.

Act I is complete.  The Occupy movement opened Act II; there is ample discontent.  It only needs to be channeled, fanned and kept alive.  “Those damned Regressives, now they want to take away your sex life”.  That will do it.  That’s the Catholic flap.

Act III…, there will be no Act III; we will see to that in November.  But if there were, the curtain would open in January with an Inauguration Proclamation declaring, “I, Barack Hussein Obama, am the way, the truth and the light; there is no way out of this mess but by me”.  And America would be on the road to becoming a Marxist Socialist society.

THE CATHOLIC FLAP, A CASE OF PLANNED AGITATION?

Dick Morris says the Catholic flap is a planned plot.  The Democrats know the abortion issue is a loser for them.  The idea is to twist it into a contraception issue and then scare the voters into fearing the Republicans may try to ban the use of contraception devices.

The speculation gains credence when you remember how George Stephanopoulos grilled Mitt Romney with the question of whether or not he thought states had the legal right o ban contraceptives.

The question came totally out of thin air and never before existed as an issue. Romney called it a ridiculous hypothetical question, which it was, and refused to answer it.  But Stephanopoulos did not give up easily.  He seemed to be a man on a mission.  Was he doing duty as a surrogate to set contraception up as an issue?  Dick Morris thinks so.  In a prior post I wrote “If there is one thing the President knows well, it is the art of agitation, how to create it, how to use it as a tool…”  Morris just might be right.

PERILOUS TIMES

The headlines below are un-edited from the Drudge Report on Feb. 15,2012.  I regrouped them into rough categories and dropped some punctuation, those are the only changes made.  Arranged this way the headlines paint a picture of a U.S policy to weaken itself militarily in face of rising external threats, the possibility of Iran’s promulgating a second holocaust , turning a blind eye to China’s human rights record while they conduct a vast military buildup, unabated political corruption, the direction the Arab Spring is taking, the failure of Obama’s economic policies and a growing loss of personal freedoms.

MEMORANDUM MACHT FREI

This photo-shopped picture of German Chancellor Angela Merkel was printed in a Greek newspaper.  The offensive image was captioned “Memorandum macht frei” a slogan relating to the Auschwitz extermination camp of World War II.

These are only the headlines, from only one publication, on only one day and it’s not even lunch time. We are indeed living in perilous times. Obama voters, are you sure you want Barack Obama in charge for four more years?

GREECE

THE PARTHENON, 2 MILES and 26 CENTURIES AWAY

Right across the street from the Parliament building in Athens there stands an outdoor café.  Many times I have sat and sipped  Ouzos at that cafe watching the changing of the guard as one stoic protector of the palace replaced another.  They strut and stomp across the plaza then placidate themselves in front of those little wooden houses that look like they belong more in cartoons rather than standing as bastions of government.  There are two guards.  Each carries an unarmed rifle.  They don’t protect anything of course; it’s a show, a demonstration of sorts.

I wonder where they are now.  Today the demonstrations are in the same place but they are of a different kind.  There are fires on the plaza.  Did they burn those silly little guard houses, I wonder.  I do know, however, that the protesters burned the German flag.  They didn’t burn the German flag because Germany contributed more funds than any other European nation to help Greece out.  They burned the flag because Germany stopped.  Feed a hungry bear and he will lick your hand.  Stop and he will bite it off.

The root problem in Greece is not financial; it is cultural.  If the Soviet Union was the triumph of Communism, then Greece is the triumph of Socialism.  The country has a history of economic distress.  In 1922 the government decreed that 50% of all privately held money in banks had to be given to the government.  The national treasury gave bonds in exchange, to be repaid on 20 years with a nominal interest rate of 6 ½ %.  Neither interest nor principle were ever paid.  The people bailed the country out, involuntarily.  It happened again in 1926, four years later another bailout.  In 1932 the country declared a moratorium on their international debt.  Bailed out again, this time by the international community, again involuntarily.

Should the world do it again?  For humanitarian reasons, perhaps we must, but for how long and how much.  Philanthropy overdone eventually becomes license for continued misbehavior.  It is Europe’s problem and Europe is doing its best to solve it.  Germany enjoys the largest and strongest economy in Europe so the cross falls primarily on the German people to bear.  We empathize.  We have been there.
