CONSERVATISM SPEAKS OUT AT THE NEW YORK TIMES

Bill Kristol was considered to be the only conservative columnist at the New York Times…until he was fired. Then there were none…until his replacement arrived, a man by the name of Ross Douthat. Here are some excerpts from Mr. Douthat’s Op-Ed piece on the Restoring Honor Rally.

Mr. BECK GOES TO WASHINGTON. New York Times, Published: August 29, 2010

Just as Michael Moore, amid Democratic disarray, became the unlikely face of liberal opposition to George W. Bush, the mercurial, weepy, demagogic Beck has spent the last 18 months filling the void left by the institutional collapse of the Republican Party. And just as Moore’s influence diminished as the Democrats came roaring back, it seemed plausible that Beck would matter less and less as the midterms and then the 2012 election re-empowered actual Republican politicians.

This was a tent revival crossed with a pep rally intertwined with a history lecture married to a U.S.O. telethon — and that was just in the first hour.

There was piety — endless piety, as speaker after speaker demanded that Americans rededicate themselves to God.

[It was possible] to justify almost any interpretation of the event. A Beck admirer could spin “Restoring Honor” as proof that left-wing fears about the Tea Partiers are overblown: But a suspicious liberal could retort that all the God-and-Christ talk and military tributes were proof enough that a sinister Christian nationalism lurked beneath the surface.

Similarly, one could call the rally a gross affront to the memory of King, who presumably wouldn’t have cared much for Beck’s right-wing politics. But one could also call the day a strange, unlooked-for fulfillment of King’s prophecies: 47 years after the “I Have a Dream” speech, here were tens of thousands of white conservatives roaring their approval of its author.

A weepy demagogue. the Michael Moore of the Republican Party, surrounded by white folks roaring their approval. That’s the report from the Conservative desk of the New York Times.

MISSING AT THE BECK RALLY

We noticed several things that were missing at Glenn Beck’s rally. We list them in random order; after all, we are Random Thots.

The name. Quick now, what was the name of the rally? The name was not well chosen and is already drifting into obscurity.

Spits and slurs. There was not so much as a false allegation of spits and slurs. The earlier attempt to smear by resorting to the despicable tactic of false accusations of such a serious nature only served to expose the deviousness of some members of the Black Caucus and tarnish the reputation of a respected civil rights hero. We have the people’s press to thank for that exposure.

Blacks. There were very few Black people, less even than the proportion of Blacks estimated to be in the Tea Party movement.

Signs. It was a wise move to ask that signs not be brought. Complying with that request was  indicative of the nature of the crowd. Salt of the earth, good folks, adherents to the values the rally was designed to encourage, restore and preserve.

Litter, drugs, condoms and miscarriages. Remember Woodstock? It took several days to clean up the sight. 800 People were treated for drug related medical issues; eight miscarriages were reported. Such wanton behavior was missing at the Beck rally.

Passel of Politicians. Sarah Palin was there, but politicians were few in number and there were none presently holding office.

It was “The Restoring Honor Rally”. Disruptive behavior, angry confrontations and tee shirts in bad taste were not common fare. Also missing was condemnation of Obama by any of the speakers. His name never came up.

THAT BLAGO JUROR

The one juror of twelve who saved Blagojevich from the hoosegow has spoken. She saw the man as a narcissist with a swiss cheese brain. On the tapes he could be heard discussing an ambassadorship to India one day and then talking about appointing Oprah Winfrey to the seat the next.

So eleven of the jury saw Blago as a criminal and one saw him as an idiotic nut case. In either instance, how does a man like that get to be governor of a significant state like Illinois? The answer, of course, is to run on the Democratic ticket.

That’s not cynicism: unfortunately, it’s a truism. Republicans have elected some corrupt politicians, but it’s the Democrats that specialize in electing the ilk of Gov. Blagojevich to the higher offices like that of Senator or Governor. Did you ever hear of a Republican Machine? How far do you think the likes of an Al Franken would have risen in the Republican party?

MARTIN LUTHER KING

Today we honor Martin Luther King. He was the right man at the right time. His death was a tragedy; his birth was a blessing; he earned he birthday we celebrate each spring. Today we remember him on the 45th anniversary of his “I have a dream” speech given on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

His dream was of a color blind America where a man would be judged by his character, not the color of his skin. We had come a long way toward fulfillment, and then progress was slowed to a crawl by the two opportunistic perpetuaters, Jackson and Sharpton. But the real spoiler of King’s dream is Barack Obama.

If by some turn of events, Colin Powell were seated at the White House, and not Barack Obama, this country would not be experiencing the current growth in the racial divide.

I was 23 years old in 1965, white and living in the North but I remember segregation very well. I do hope you will take the time to watch and listen to Martin Luther King and “I have a dream”.

NATIONAL ANTHEM BANNED IN NATIONAL PARKS

The Lincoln Memorial is in the news again. We are reminded of an incident that took place on its steps in June. A group of high school students from Georgia were on a tour of all the Washington D.C. memorials. As they stood in awe below that towering statue of Abraham Lincoln one of them spontaneously started to sing the National Anthem. Others joined in. It promised to be one of those special moments, a delightful mix of lack of talent and love of land.

But the government stopped it immediately. One participant said they had hardly finished the second bar when a National Park Service officer stepped forth and declared “demonstrations” are not allowed. But there were no signs; there was no “demonstration”. The officer said “The grounds must remain neutral”. Neutral? Showing pride in our country is not allowed in National Parks?

A rustling went through the small group of youngsters – this is America – why can’t we sing? – I can’t believe this. Then, once again they broke into spontaneous song. Only this time they sang the anthem through to the end.

Dear friends, there is hope for America. In fact, with youth like these, there is more than hope. There is assurance. Here is the inspiring video.

NEW COMBAT TROOPS DEPLOYED TO IRAQ

Bangor, Maine is the last stop in the U.S. for many troops on the way East because it is the closest major airport to Europe and points east. The Bangor Daily News reported at 9:45 yesterday evening that approximately 150 new combat troops are leaving Bangor for Iraq. Read the article here.

They are not “new” troops because they are replacing soldiers who are returning. They are not “combat” troops because , although trained and classified and as combat troops, they are not expected to engage in combat. Their function will be to train others to engage in combat.

That sounds like a very fine line of distinction. The returning troops saw little actual combat recently. They were combat ready, of course, but the arriving soldiers will also be ready if needed.

In the fanfare surrounding “the withdrawal of the last combat soldier from Iraq” the fact that 50,000 troops remained was completely overlooked by the press. That is an awful lot of teachers.

AMERICA IS GOING IN A DIRECTION, BIDEN SAYS

Biden, ‘We’re Moving In The Right Direction’

Random Thots reports on speech to the U.I.D.V.A.*

VICE PRESIDENT, UNITED STATES of AMERICA

B.F.D. Biden (Joe) began his speech to the U.I. conventioneers by saying “After 8 years of failed policies of the Bush Administration that left us with a 4.6% rate of unemployment, Our Administration has finally put the nation on the path in which we believe it should go”. The people cheered.

Biden continued, “Critical mid-term elections are coming, in November I think. Campaigning is in my blood so I am happy to be out here on a stump again. I was excited when my advisers told me I was not up for re-election this year. It meant I could devote all my time to flying over the country in Air Force II and talk to groups like you”.

In a plea to the U.I. audience B.F.D. said “We have done a lot already but there is much more of the same yet to do. We desperately need your support, very desperately. We must pass Cap and Trade to bring to industry what healthcare reform has brought to you. We must pass Card Check to strengthen the forces that patrol our polling places lest they get out of control. We must obstruct Republican obstruction or the current path of the nation will be reversed.

“The crowd began to cheer. The VP raised his left hand in a fist and shouted “Vote! Vote! Vote! And vote again! As many times as you can!”

As the U.I. members left the hall, Joe shook each ones hand and said “Don’t forget to vote. It’s in November I think.”
