IT’S SADIE HAWKINS DAY!

Run for your lives, men; it’s Feb 29th

There once was a time, long long ago, when ladies did not make advances to men.  This was a handicap that fell hardest on the less attractive members of the distaff gender.  It was back about 1937 when Hekzebiah Hawkins decided to do something about it.  His daughter was the ugliest gal in all of Dogpatch and he feared she would be besot with spinsterhood.

Now, Hekzebiah was recognized by some folks as the Mayor of Dogpatch.  Be that truth or otherwise, old Hek was for sure influential in the valley so he decreed a day be set aside for a foot race where the gals could chase the guy of her choice, and if caught, the poor lad was obliged to accept a life of blissful matrimony with the successful runner.  It would be Sadie Hawkins day.

But, alas, the day Hekzebiah chose for this annual event was the last day of February in 1936.  It happened to be leap year, leaving the gals only one day every four years for their pursuits.  Most of the folks in the valley agreed with Prudence Pimpleton who said “it was Lil Abner’s lobbyist what got that day picked, no doubt about it”.

KRUGMAN WATCH – WHAT AILS EUROPE?

We learn from Mr. Krugman that he, and only he has the answer.  There is the “Republican narrative and the German narrative. Neither story fits the facts.”

“The Republican story ….. is that Europe is in trouble because it has done too much to help the poor and unlucky,”  This is a classic mischaracterization of Republican and conservative positions.  Conservatives have just as much compassion for the truly poor and unlucky as anyone.  The objection is to the creation of dependency and an unsustainable welfare state that extends well beyond the poor and unlucky to include a majority of the populace.  The inimitable Denis Miller put it succinctly when he said “We just want some bona fides, that’s all”.

“[C]ountries that aren’t on the euro seem able to run large deficits and carry large debts countries that aren’t on the euro seem able to run large deficits and carry large debts without facing any crises. Britain and the United States can borrow long-term at interest rates of around 2 percent; Japan, which is far more deeply in debt than any country in Europe, Greece included, pays only 1 percent… Britain and the United States can borrow long-term at interest rates of around 2 percent; Japan, which is far more deeply in debt than any country in Europe, Greece included, pays only 1 percent.”

What’s that Paul,“without facing any crises”  There’s the rub.  What must it take to get Mr. K to see a pending crisis?  George Osborne holds the position of Chancellor of the UK, a position similar to that of our Treasurer.

The Government ‘has run out of money’ and cannot afford debt-fuelled tax cuts or extra spending, George Osborne has admitted. In a stark warning ahead of next month’s Budget, the Chancellor said there was little the Coalition could do to stimulate the economy. Mr. Osborne made it clear that due to the parlous state of the public finances the best hope for economic growth was to encourage businesses to flourish and hire more workers. “The British Government has run out of money because all the money was spent in the good years,” the Chancellor said.

As far as the U.S. is concerned we already know Krugman’s position is to keep increasing the level of spending until it gets us out of debt.  It’s my blog but I am a generous chap so I’ll give the famed economist the final word… which is –

“The next time you hear people invoking the European example …. here’s what you need to know: they have no idea what they’re talking about.”

JUST WHEN YOU THINK OBAMA HAS HIT ETHICAL BOTTOM HE GOES LOWER STILL

Imagine this –

Mitt Romney wins the nomination and promptly announces the establishment of a national community organizing machine called White Anglo-Saxons for Romney.  In the launch, Romney urges white people to show their loyalty to the white candidate because white people should support each other.  Preposterous!  Unimaginable!  But is it any more preposterous than Obama’s establishment of a national community organizing machine called “Afro-Americans for Obama” to urge black people to support his candidacy because he is black?

Obama’s television commercial is a clear message to black voters that it is their duty to be loyal to their race and vote for the black man who will balance the past injustices of the white man.  The message is – now it’s our turn.

Once again, the Great Divider seeks to divide us ever wider and use that division to further his own ends.  It is ironic that the descendants of the enslaved and the victims of discrimination are solidly supportive of the party that fought to its death for the ability to maintain slavery, and the same party that fought the hardest against the Civil Rights Act.

INSIDIOUS PENETRATION OF THE MIDDLE CLASS

Don’t blame Obama for this one. The explosion of ‘entitlements’, how I hate that word, started in the mid sixties, roared right through Reagan, got a boost from GW Bush and all Obama has to do is keep it rolling.

What’s insidious about this is how it is snaring the middle class.  The Left always has the lower income class, the perienial call for Social Justice sees to that.  The Left has a good hold on the upper income earners as well.  From Sorosto Hollywood, from the late Steve Jobs to Warren Buffet the Left has its share of the super rich.  What they need to triumph is the big middle class.  Create a dependency among the middle class and the job is almost done, democracy will do the rest.

EVER INCREASING PORTIONS ARE GOING TO THE MIDDLE CLASS

OCCUPY WOMEN TAKE THEIR PROTEST TO MEN’S TOILETS

A new women’s movement has been launched by Ms. Li Tingting in Guangzhou, China.  Speaking as a man, I have no objection to women’s movements.  Most of them are rather pleasant in fact.  But this one takes on a new dimension.  A group of ladies in China are demanding toilet equality.

When I first saw the headline I thought the fuss was about the age old conflict of the seat.  The ladies know we need it up but they always, always leave it down.  That has long been a pet beef of mine.  But no, the women in China are griping about the long waiting lines to enter the Ladies Room when there are no lines at all for the men.  Is this a valid example of social injustice or just some new form of maleness envy?

Studies show that there are about the same number of men in the world as there are women.  Further analysis reveals the size of the restrooms generally to be equal.  So what can be the cause of the problem?  More important, what is the solution?  How about MORE STALLS FOR THE 50% !!

Read about it here.  It’s priceless.

BREAKING NEWS !!

The world blew up this morning at about 8 o’clock.  There is nothing left. According to the New York Times, women, children and minorities suffered the most.  Vladimir Putin vowed he would restore the Soviet Union, even though it is now scattered in fragments somewhere in space.  Chavez says America did it, of course.  Obama blamed it on Bush.

“The United States are gone, all 57 of them”, noted  President Obama, then added “Well, at least it’s a complete transformation.  My only wish is that Martha’s Vineyard could have been spared”.  The insurance industry is in a panic as you might expect; they had exclusion clauses for losses due to war but not for this.

Al Gore termed it an environmental disaster.  He said it never would have happened under his administration.  He held his home state of Tennessee responsible.  “My own friends, the people who knew me best let me down.  If I had carried Tennessee the Supreme Court would not have been able to revoke my election.”  The Sierra Club expressed concern that the fracturing of earth into a collection of asteroids presents a threat to already endangered species on the other planets.  “If one of the big chunks, like Africa for instance, hits one of the smaller planets the impact will be devastating”, a representative explained.

Harold Camping called in long distance and said excitedly, “I called it!  I was just a little bit off on the date”.  Paul Krugman insists it could have been prevented if the government had only raised taxes and spent more money.  But when asked how in the world (excuse the passé expression) that would help, all he returned was a silent grin.  On the political front, the 99% are enraged.  The group is protesting that their rights have been denied because they no longer have any place to demonstrate.

The good news is Palin channeled Ronald Reagan and reports that he smiled and said “Take heart.  I have unshakeable faith in the resourcefulness of the American people.  A great hill will be rebuilt and the United States will shine brightly from the top of it once again”.

LINCOLN at COOPER UNION

President Abraham Lincoln made his public address at Cooper Union in New York City on April 27, 1860.  Six weeks later the Confederates fired on Fort Sumter starting the American Civil War.  It was Lincoln’s final speech prior to the war.

An eyewitness that evening said, “When Lincoln rose to speak, I was greatly disappointed. He was tall, tall, – oh, how tall! and so angular and awkward that I had, for an instant, a feeling of pity for so ungainly a man.” However, once Lincoln warmed up, “his face lighted up as with an inward fire; the whole man was transfigured. I forgot his clothes, his personal appearance, and his individual peculiarities. Presently, forgetting myself, I was on my feet like the rest, yelling like a wild Indian, cheering this wonderful man.”

Lincoln’s law partner. William Herndon, who was not present but knew the speech, said it was “devoid of all rhetorical imagery.  It was constructed with a view to accuracy of statement, simplicity of language, and unity of thought. In some respects like a lawyer’s brief, it was logical, temperate in tone, powerful – irresistibly driving conviction home to men’s reasons and their souls.”

Lincoln began:

The facts with which I shall deal this evening are mainly old and familiar; nor is there anything new in the general use I shall make of them.  If there shall be any novelty, it will be in the mode of presenting the facts, and the inferences and observations following that presentation.

In his speech last autumn, at Columbus, Ohio, as reported in “The New-York Times,” Senator Douglas said: “Our fathers, when they framed the Government under which we live, understood this question just as well, and even better, than we do now.”

I fully indorse this, and I adopt it as a text for this discourse. I so adopt it because it furnishes a precise and an agreed starting point for a discussion between Republicans and that wing of the Democracy headed by Senator Douglas. It simply leaves the inquiry: “What was the understanding those fathers had of the question mentioned?”

What is the frame of government under which we live?  The answer must be: “The Constitution of the United States…”

About midway in the speech:

I would say to them [Democrats in opposition to ending slavery]: – You consider yourselves a reasonable and a just people; and I consider that in the general qualities of reason and justice you are not inferior to any other people. Still, when you speak of us Republicans, you do so only to denounce us a reptiles, or, at the best, as no better than outlaws. You will grant a hearing to pirates or murderers, but nothing like it to “Black Republicans.” In all your contentions with one another, each of you deems an unconditional condemnation of “Black Republicanism” as the first thing to be attended to. Indeed, such condemnation of us seems to be an indispensable prerequisite – license, so to speak – among you to be admitted or permitted to speak at all. Now, can you, or not, be prevailed upon to pause and to consider whether this is quite just to us, or even to yourselves? Bring forward your charges and specifications, and then be patient long enough to hear us deny or justify.

Lincoln ends with this pledge:

Neither let us be slandered from our duty by false accusations against us, nor frightened from it by menaces of destruction to the Government nor of dungeons to ourselves. LET US HAVE FAITH THAT RIGHT MAKES MIGHT, AND IN THAT FAITH, LET US, TO THE END, DARE TO DO OUR DUTY AS WE UNDERSTAND IT.

GEORGE BEVERLY SHEA

His frends call him Bev.  George Beverly Shea is Grammy Award-winning Canadian-born gospel singer and hymn composer. Bev celebrated his 103rd birthday less than three weeks ago.  He was born on the first of February in the year 1909.

If it is appointed unto man to live three score years and ten, Bev has indeed been blessed.

PUTIN ON THE PROWL

Barack Obama & Vladimir Putin at Putin's dacha...

From the Washington Post

MOSCOW — A nasty spate of anti-Americanism set off by Vladimir V. Putin has grown into waves of attacks aimed at the new American ambassador and Russian opposition leaders, raising questions about the future of U.S.-Russian relations.

The attacks started just before the December parliamentary elections and have intensified as the March 4 presidential vote approaches. Although widely viewed as aimed primarily at a domestic audience, they have grown shriller and more aggressive, provoking debate about whether Russia is deliberately giving a cold shoulder to President Obama’s effort to promote more productive relations.

A main target of the attacks is Michael McFaul, the new ambassador, a longtime democracy advocate and Russia expert who as a top aide to Obama has been an architect of what the White House calls a “reset’’ with Moscow.

Barack Obama cozied up to to the Russians and and tried to convince them we should be friends now that we share the same ideology.  Putin didn’t buy it, of course.
