RANDOM THOTS for Aug 13, 2010

Happy triskaidekaphobia day!
It is a good day to watch where you step. Many years ago, on another triskadekwhatever day a good friend of mine was walking under a ladder when a black cat scooted across his path. The cat so startled him that he dropped the mirror he was carrying only to see it break into a million pieces. Woe came unto him. For the rest of his life, his wife refused to leave him. So be careful, lest the same should happen to you.

I see Obama has transferred his Ethics Czar to the Czech Republic.
Timothy Carney over at the Washington  Examiner reports on it in a piece entitled Obama closes curtain on transparency. I am only 80 years old, but this Administration is the least transparent I have seen in my lifetime. Right off the bat, press conferences were manipulated. That we saw when Obama  “accepted” a question from a reporter who had not raised his hand. The reporter was not paying attention and didn’t realize it was his turn to ask his friendly and obviously anticipated question.

Then Obama and his boys tried to exclude Fox News from a press meeting to which all the other networks had been invited. The Administration ran the Totalitarian flag up the pole with that move. Imagine what might have followed if the MSM had not shot it down. Even the liberal MSM saw the threat.

Ethics Czar?   Shoosh, Rahm. We don’t need no ethics Czar. Send him to the C.R.

VIRGINIA JOINS ARIZONA IN IMMIGRATION FIGHT

VIRGINIA GOVERNOR McDONNELL

Virginia Gov. McDonnell is paving the way for authorizing the VA State Police to check for immigration status when they stop individuals for other reasons. Virginia joins a growing list of States who see the need to step in and act where the Federal government has failed them.

Nine States have filed amicus briefs in Federal Court in support of Arizona in the pending case of the Obama government vs. the State of Arizona. Those States are AL, FL, MI, NE, PA, SC and TX. Five States have gone a step further and have introduced their own legislation in the same vein as Arizona’s. Those States are SC, PA, MI, MN and RI. Others expected to introduce similar legislation soon are FL, TX and UT.

If the first obligation of government is to keep its citizens safe, should not the second obligation be to keep the States United? It is the President’s responsibility to maintain such unity. Obama, however, has brought a bucket of gasoline to put out the fire.

In Rules for Radicals, Saul Alinsky taught that the first goal for a community organizer needs to be acceptance. The second is to agitate. Crisis and controversy are tools to be used to bring an increase of power. Obama is strengthening his position with his core following and shows no concern for the division he is feeding. This is wholly consistent with his Marxist leanings.

1099 TAX REPORTING FIASCO

1099 Form filing requirement is nightmare for small corporations

Imagine you own a small incorporated business, perhaps a landscaping business and you rent a de-thatcher for a couple of days, or perhaps it’s a donut shop and you have a new sign painted for the front door. The Obamacare law requires you to prepare and issue 1099 Tax Reporting forms reporting to the IRS that the rental agency and the sign painter received money from you. In fact you must report to the IRS anyone who received 600 dollars or more from you during the year.

It is preposterous! It so onerous it would be nearly impossible to comply with it. In fact, there is no way it will be complied with. This provision must be repealed. Republicans insist and Democrats acknowledge it cannot stand. Republicans say repeal it. Democrats insist on replacing it. Stalemate. The Democrats don’t want simply to repeal it because it was designed to raise 19 billion in new income taxes.

The Dems were right, we would never have known what is in the Obamacare bill if it had not become law.

MISSOURI vs. WASHINGTON

Proposition C voters said YES to the tune of 71% in favor of the Proposition which says NO to mandated insurance for health care. Missouri thus joins with Arizona in entering into a serious conflict between a sovereign State and the Federal government, AZ over illegal immigration, MO over Obamacare. What State will be next? What issue will be next?

This case is almost certain to go to the U.S. Supreme Court. If the Court upholds Missouri’s Proposition C, Missouri residents will be exempt from the Federal mandate to buy this insurance. An avalanche of states will follow. Obamacare will be in trouble. Kagan, if appointed, will be the leftmost judge on the court. The direction in which she would vote is not in doubt.

One of the reasons America surpassed Europe to become a superpower is that Europe is comprised of nation states that repeatedly make war with each other while our states remain united, even following a civil war.

We were a nation that had grown harshly divided along political lines in recent years. Obama promised to bring unity. Instead, we have seen only a widening of the gap and a hardening of the hostility along political lines.

We have quoted Lincoln before and we will quote him again, “A house divided cannot stand.”

CARD CHECK IS COMING

As the video attests, Nancy Pelosi has promised union members that the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) will be enacted. There is no better example of propagandic than the title of this proposed law. The sole purpose of the Employee Free Choice Act is to hinder free choice. The name of the bill infers exactly the opposite of the intent of the bill.

The EFCA is a simple piece of legislation. Under the proposed law union organizers only need to get half of the employees to sign a card and the shop becomes unionized. Secret balloting becomes disallowed. If the bill becomes law, intimidation and broken legs are sure to follow.

Do not fail to vote in November! Those elections will still be confidential.

SOCIALIZED MEDICINE FOR JO DOWLING R.I.P.

When there is only one provider of a service, the quality of the service is sure to decline. When the provider is deeply in debt, some of the services will surely be curtailed. When the service is health care, some people will die. When the provider of the service is the government there is nothing you can do about it but wait until Election Day and cast your one vote.

Obama has promised competition and choice will remain. He lies. That’s a bold assertion but how else can you phrase it when you have seen and heard him tell selected audiences that single payer is the goal, but it needs to be achieved gradually because of the opposition to it? The bill just passed is but the intended first step in Obamacare.

The British people have lived with a single provider system for many years. Here is a link to a news item of how “free health care” failed one young woman in England. Be forewarned, you will need a strong stomach to read it.

Each of us has but one precious vote. Cast yours in memory of Jo Dowling.

THE DAWN AWAKENS

Investors Business Daily asks, Will Washington’s Failures Lead To Second American Revolution? We present excerpts from their Editorial.

People are asking, “Is the government doing us more harm than good? Should we change what it does and the way it does it?”

Pruning the power of government begins with the imperial presidency.

Too many overreaching laws give the president too much discretion to make too many open-ended rules controlling too many aspects of our lives. There’s no end to the harm an out-of-control president can do.

Bill Clinton lowered the culture, moral tone and strength of the nation. George W. Bush stood up for America, albeit sometimes clumsily.

Barack Obama, however, has pulled off the ultimate switcheroo: He’s diminishing America from within — so far, successfully.

He is undermining our constitutional traditions: The rule of law and our Anglo-Saxon concepts of private property hang in the balance. Obama may be the most “consequential” president ever.

His bullying and offenses against the economy and job creation are so outrageous that CEOs in the Business Roundtable finally mustered the courage to call him “anti-business.” Veteran Democrat Sen. Max Baucus blurted out that Obama is engineering the biggest government-forced “redistribution of income” in history.

Fear and uncertainty stalk the land. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke says America’s financial future is “unusually uncertain.”

Obama is building an imperium of public debt and crushing taxes,

Opinion polls suggest that in the November mid-term elections, voters will replace the present Democratic majority in Congress with opposition Republicans — but that will not necessarily stop Obama.

In normal times, it my be about 40% of the population that remain politically uninformed, 40% that pay attention only during campaign season and 20% that stay well informed throughout the election cycle. Times are different now, but it remains that Obama was largely unknown before his election and no more than a small minority really knew the man at the time of his inauguration. A year and a half later the voters are finally catching on.

HEALTH CARE BILL FOR 911 FIRST RESPONDERS

The games politicians play.

The House bill would provide special medical benefits for the heroes of 911. Both parties overwhelmingly favor providing the benefits contained in the bill. So why was it defeated and why is the issue so hot in the House?

It is politics of course.  It would have passed under the general rules of the House. But those rules allow the proposal of amendments from any Congressman. There is a special rule that blocks amendments.  The party that controls the House sets the House rules. The Democrats selected the second rule so Republicans would be unable to propose any amendments.

It would have passed under the general rules. The Democrats control the House and had the votes needed. They chose to present the bill for vote in a manner that assured its defeat.

This New York Times article explains it fairly well. However, I would suggest changing the very first sentence from:

House Republicans on Thursday blocked a Democratic plan to provide billions of dollars for medical treatment to rescue workers and residents of New York City who suffered illnesses from the toxic dust and debris at ground zero.

To read:

House Democrats blocked passage of their own plan to provide billions of dollars for medical treatment to rescue workers and residents of New York City who suffered illnesses from the toxic dust and debris at ground zero. Despite having the votes for passage under the general rules, the Majority party chose to invoke a special rule that led to its defeat.

Here is the heated exchange as the two parties display their anger.

DRAINING PELOSI’S SWAMP

What’s that old saying about stones and glass houses? I think it goes ‘if you swim in a cesspool don’t complain about someone else’s swamp’.

Politicians turn melancholy when one of them gets caught. You can hear them sigh, -but for the grace of God, it could have been me. The Speaker of the House, third in line for the Presidency, is beyond melancholy. She is calling the entire Republican party “is a criminal conspiracy”. Does she not know that Rangel is a Democrat?

When there is no defense, go on offense. That’s taught in Litigation 101. If your client is guilty, attack the witnesses. Perhaps the witness that saw your client pump 5 bullets into the victim once cheated on his wife. Who is going to believe a man like that?

Hillary took the same Litigation class. A vast right-wing conspiracy served as the straw man, correction – straw woman, in that case.
